Each year for Black Potatoe we have hundreds of submissions, sometimes reaching into the thousands. Over the years we have charged a small fee, through third party services, to help us maintain this number to something that we can realistically handle. We direct artists and bands to this third party site and as a result we weed out about 75% of those that are interested in playing the festival. We know that money is tight for indie bands and we know that these third party companies care more about their bottom lines then the welfare of indie bands. We do care, which is why for the last 10 years every dollar that we have raised via submissions has gone right back to the artists that play the festival. In the past few years we have had between 150 to 250 submissions via these third parties, and on average we accept between 5-12% of all submissions, making up 33-60% of the acts that play. In case your wondering the average festival with submissions in the thousands is accepting on average 3%. Big festivals that may accept more, have you vying for attention while music is at dozens of venues miles apart, where at Black Potatoe, there are two stages less than 50 yards apart and they never play at the same time. We want to help indie artist, just like we did 20 years ago when we started and well before "indies" were the in-thing.
WE ARE MAKING 15-20 SPOTS AVAILABLE this year, making up about 45-80% of the acts playing. We are honest, if we don't have 15-20 that match, we won't just fill the spots, but in 20 years, that has never happened. There are great acts out there and we love that they submit to our festival. So, good luck and we hope to see you in 2017. Remember "Demand Your Independents".
